Those that know say it was King Alphonse XII who gave the name of “Balcony of Europe” to this area when he visited it on the 12th of January of 1885.
This city belongs to the Costa del Sol of Spain. It has a lovely walkway facing the sea and located on a cliff with views of the Mediterranean and surrounding mountains. Below, there are sandy beaches and coves next to the cliffs.
Outstanding beaches are those of Calahonda because of its proximity to town and services, another beach is that of Burriana, which is further away from town and is, therefore, more calm and natural and is a movie set. Other beaches nearby are those of El Chorrillo, El Carabeo and El Carabeillo.
The Nerja caves located in the municipality of Maro and discovered on 12 January 1959. In it have been dated some paintings of seals that could be the first known work of art in the history of humanity, with 42,000 years of antiquity. Of great international value in the geological environment to be able to visit them from its interior is an inescapable opportunity.
One of the most beautiful white villages of the Costa del Sol, of Moorish style, with narrow winding steep streets, full of passageways, creating a unique Old Quarter. This town has well preserved Arab style architecture and was voted the Most Beautiful Town of Spain in 1982.
Of its patrimony outstanding elements are the Old Fountain built in the Seventeenth century by Count and Lord of Frigiliana, D. Iñigo Manrique de Lara with the aim of providing the population with drinking water, the Ecce Homo Hermitage or Holy Christ of the Reed, the Renaissance church of Saint Anthony of Padua dating back to the Seventeenth Century, the Royal Silos built in 1767 to store excess grain during large harvest years and which today is transformed into residences. The Tower where the old silos were located, the remains of the Moorish castle, the House of Farming Tools, initially dedicated to being a farm, stables and warehouse and which today is the site of the Archaeological Museum, the Town Library and another interesting building is the Palace of the Counts of Frigiliana, known as “El Ingenio” today the site of the Molasses Factory of Our Lady of Carmen, the only place where this product is made in all of Europe.
