Alcazar of the Christian Kings

Created on the remnants of the Andalusí Alcázar, of Mudéjar style, with military aims in 1328 by orders of King Alphonse XI of Castille.

Here is where the Christian Kings lived for 8 years while the campaign against the Kingdom of Granada was waged, one of his daughters was born here, the Infanta Doña María who would later be Queen of Portugal.

It housed Christopher Columbus who had an interview in 1486 with the monarchs with the aim of collecting funds for his voyage to the Indies.
Later on, the building was lent to the Inquisition when it was transformed into the Court of the Holy Office until it was abolished in 1812 and transformed again into a prison and military installations until it was transferred to the City Hall of Córdoba in 1955.

As is the case of any Al-Andalus construction, it has extensive and magnificent gardens with fruit trees, cypresses, palm trees, fountains, ponds and statues. The ancient and enormous Orchard of the Alcázar (55.000 m²) has been transformed into an impressive garden surrounded by fountains and ponds.

Built on three levels, the upper garden, the middle garden and the lower garden. The stone fountain we find when entering this area brings water from the hills After, we can traverse the Walkway of the Kings, which is surrounded by cylindrical cypresses and is divided in two by narrow ponds. Sculptures placed on pedestals are distributed throughout the area, one of these is that of the kings who built the Alcázar.

In the Alcázar we can visit the external part where we find 4 towers: The Homage Tower, Tower of the Lions, Tower of the Inquisition and Tower of the Pigeon

Hall of the Mosaics

Inside, we find patios and halls: Hall of the Mosaics: in it, we can admire the impressive mosaics found at the end of the Fifties in the Corredera square and which formed part of a Roman circus as well as a sarcophagus of the Third Century. The moorish patio or Mudéjar patio with marble flooring.

The Ladies Patio in which the Alcázar was used as a prison, at this time this patio was used as a ladies prison.

The Reception Hall: or Oceanus hall, houses on one of its walls a Roman mosaic dedicated to the god Oceanus. There are also some pews of the ancient chapel dating back to the seventeenth century.

Royal Baths of Doña Leonor, built in 1328 by King Alphonse XI which has four halls: the dressing room, cold hall, warm hall and hot hall. These were known as the Royal Baths of Doña Leonor in honour of the King’s lover, Doña Leonor de Guzmán.

Royal stables

Built in 1570 and located next to the Alcázar and where King Philip II gathered the best studs and fillies giving rise to the creation of the Andalusian horse breed.
