Kings Path “Caminito del Rey”
One of the most visited touristic attractions of Málaga, located between Álora and Ardales. Belongs to the Natural Park of “Desfiladero de los Gaitanes”
Today dedicated to touristic visits in an impressive setting, it was created as a need for the workers of the Hydroelectric Society of El Chorro in 1901 to supply electric energy to the city of Málaga using the Guadalhorce river. At that time this path of walkways was known as Way of the Balconies, but after the visit by King Alphonse XIII, in 1921, it was given the name of “Caminito del Rey”, (King’s walkway or path).
Years after, the walkways were abandoned as well as the installations and this made it a dangerous place which was of interest to some explorers but after some fatal accidents it was closed to the public.
Later on, with the possibility of giving the area touristic value, in 2014 works to restore the area were started and the Camino was built with new walkways and greater safety for visitors and it was opened to the public in 2015.
Natural Area and Dam of El Chorro
We will visit the park of Ardales which is a forest on the banks of the Guadalhorce Dam next to the Natural park of the Gorge of Los Gaitanes. This dam was initially known as Dam of El Chorro but in 1953 it became known as Dam of the Count of Guadalhorce.
One of the curious things to visit in the Dams is the so called “Armchair of the King” which is a set of two benches, an armchair and a table all made of stone, where King Alphonse XIII signed the conclusión of the works of the dam of the Count of Guadalhorce. From the Kings Armchair to the other side of the dam one can see the “House of the Engineer” or “House of the Count” which is off limits today.
Also in the area of the Conde de Guadalhorce Dam one can see the façade of the Church which was also used as a school. Another interesting site is the “Viewpoint” from which one can view the entire dam.
The path of the Caminito is linear, not circular, in a unique and descending direction from North (Ardales) to South (El Chorro).
It consists of a linear journey of 7,7 km (approximately 3 hours)
Once inside and started the Caminito there is no option to go back. Only for serious emergencies.
Since it is an outdoor activity, and can give notice that it will be closed for bad weather without prior notice in time. In case of occurrence, another activity will be carried out as similar as possible, without stopping the excursion.
